Social Conundrums, Part XIII

By Renee Hughes Gershom Hannah's promise rang in my head throughout the meeting. Without it, I would have felt utterly defeated. Other than expressing sympathy with my views and position none of my supporters had anything of true substance to add.  A few promised to start a protest to call attention to the issue. Others vowed to voice their full objections to it at our final meeting with the mediator. These were nothing more than symbolic gestures and would accomplish nothing.  The reptiles remained respectfully quiet throughout Hannah's presentation but no one thought it had any merit. Her suggestion of doing a thorough background check into Anne's past had been a controversial one. In the beginning, I too discouraged the idea but as our options narrowed I pushed for it to happen. Now I felt the backlash of that decision.  "Anne's past is not relevant," an indignant Indian python said with a loud angry hiss after Hannah spoke. "It is her philosophic...

Social Conundrums, Part XII

By Renee Ann Hughes G ershom Alone I once again moved towards the tree. The thoughts plaguing me earlier vanishing as an iron will replaced them. Anne was wrong, giving the emerging inhabitants of the planet project any type of social code would destroy them. She had to be stopped. Armed with this new certainty I greeted the others who arrived at the tree shortly after I did. Everyone of them in the form of a snake of some kind. The simple reptilian bodies were a sharp contrast to the human forms we wore when attending the social code committee. In theory being human should allow us to really understand the plight of the planet project's new inhabitants. I originally believed this but no longer. Animals give us a much better prospective. Their survival depends on living in the moment and accepting the circumstances surrounding them. Their biology and experiences shaped their lives not some verbal directive given to them from their creator. The humans, who will be sign...

Social Conundrums, Part XI

By Renee Ann Hughes Gershom Undulating through the tall grass gave me time to think while the sun rays warmed my reptilian body. I would be meeting with my supporters soon getting ready to put our plan into action. My beady snake eyes stared ahead at our meeting spot only a couple feet away at the base of a large tree. Anne had wholeheartedly endorsed Mediator Kim's Third Way. Her impassioned plea for us to do the same still enraged me. The two of us had been steadily drifting apart ever since she asked for a mediator. It was hard to be with her when I secretly plotted against her decision. I suppose what we had ended the day she talked to Ezekiel about mediation but my feelings wouldn't let me completely let go of what we had. A memory of her smile could still make my heart quicken even now when the two of us were estranged. Why was I attracted to someone who disagreed with me on a fundamental level! It made no sense but then again who said our emotions were logical. The ...
